…if you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.

Marcus Tullis Cicero

We feel that landscape design often misses the mix of modern and old that is the mark of the more innovative interior designers.

At Uncommon Gardens we strive to create biodiverse habitats by exploring the reuse/reimagining of the existing hardscape and structures, the addition of drought-tolerant native and nonnative plantings, and the creation of dynamic forms from simple materials.

Our contemporary palette integrated with  existing structures, trees, and  terrain creates a unified environment and garden representing both the contemporary and traditional.

From urban courtyards, to commercial spaces, to residences of all sizes.

Bruce Hollister

Principal and founder of Uncommon Gardens.

Bruce’s background is in fine arts and tv/film production design.

His fine arts focus is in painting with post baccalaureate work at UC Santa Cruz and the International School of Art in Todi, Italy working under Nicolas Carone.

After moving to Los Angeles and pursuing a 20 year career in television and film, Bruce started collaborating with his friend and contractor Nick Tan to create dynamic and sculptural landscapes for residential and commercial properties.

His experience in the fast paced and demanding field of production design ensures project management that is timely and professional.

Designs begin by hand – observing and sketching onsite – and are finalized into working plans using a combination of 2D and 3D CAD software.
